How Journalists Work

Journalists gather, research, write and report the news and also do some editing. The field of journalism is not limited to newspapers, magazines, radio and television but also applies to the world’s fastest-growing media, the Internet.

What functions do journalists perform?

Journalism is a very-broad field and there are many types of journalists that fulfill its needs. In general, however, journalists report and write on almost any subject that is newsworthy on a local, statewide, nationwide or international level. The subject may be politics, health & medicine, sports, recreation, technology, pets, lifestyles, relationships, clothing, food, gardening or just simple local stories. Journalism requires that those who facilitate the news first be reasonably good writers, spellers and grammarians with a talent for research and interviewing. Today, the journalistic research function is greatly simplified thanks to the availability of Internet search engines as fast, reliable research tools.

Journalists work in many different places

The journalism field provides numerous opportunities. Journalists work for general interest news outlets such as newspapers, news magazines, radio and TV stations, trade and hobby publications and for specialist publishers with a select group of subscribers. In many cases, they become ‘specialists’ in their own right and concentrate on certain areas or ‘beats’ exclusively. This is particularly apparent in the fields of politics and technology areas. Today, many journalism people are also working for Internet publishers and others who provide information via the World Wide Web. Many of these function as independent contractors or freelancers who bid on writing and reporting projects posted on websites designed for the purpose. In this case, they are providers for outsource buyers worldwide.

Journalists write in many different styles too

Print journalism occupies many different categories including newspapers, magazines, newsletters, private publications and online new pages. Each can have its own particular requirements for researching, writing and style. For newspapers in the US, journalists have traditionally written in an inverted pyramid style when preparing straight news reports. These reports are rarely ‘wordy’ and detail the most important information first. This permits editors to cut the story for space considerations without deleting essential information. Features, on the other hand, are written in a more casual, looser style depending upon the subject matter. In general, though, features are allocated more space than hard news stories. Stories in trade and hobby publications are written in much greater detail and usually are well illustrated as well.

Online or cyber journalism is fast growing

Cyber journalism is the newest journalistic media mostly due to the speed at which information can be disseminated around the world. The quantity and variety of news reports are expanding exponentially and can be easily received by anyone with a computer and a web browser. Most of the major wire services and network news organizations also maintain active websites today and this growth has created widespread job opportunities for journalists everywhere. There are also many opportunities for new journalists to ‘get published’ on Internet blogs and article publishers. These, added to outsourced writing and editing opportunities, make cyber journalism a high-opportunity field for good writers and reporters.
