Tips for Freelance Actors
Freelance acting for movies, is a career choice that many people are opting for. It’s great for those who love acting and want to try their luck in front of a camera, but are reluctant to leave their regular jobs.
There can be many reasons for this. Some people are apprehensive about leaving their assured jobs and taking up acting on a full time basis. There are others, for whom acting is a hobby, and therefore getting a break in a movie is the realization of a dream, and so on and so forth.
If you want to act in a movie and are a freelance actor, then here are a few tips that might just help you out:
Don’t be out to steal a scene
Typically a movie casting director is looking for someone who can blend in with the existing cast and the script of the movie. They are not looking for scene stealers or prima-donnas, whose only goal would be to stand out from the rest of the actors with overtly dramatic acting.
Learn to be a team player
Before you try your hand at getting into a movie, you must learn the importance of being a team player. A casting director will want all actors to have certain chemistry with each other. All actors are a part of a team, and it’s the spirit of the team that wins in the end.
Be a proactive listener
As a freelance actor, you must learn to do what you are told. This means that you need to listen closely to whatever the casting director expects from you, and if you are selected, what the director of the movie wants you to do.
For this, you must listen proactively to all the instructions given to you. Do not be a passive listener, as even while listening, you can show your energy and enthusiasm for a particular part to the casting director.
Acting classes
Even a freelance actor needs to take acting classes. You must have come across lines like ‘I was born an actor’ or ‘acting cannot be learnt’ etc. You might have begun to feel that acting is something that cannot be learnt, but is a talent that is god given. You can’t be further than the truth.
If you like acting, then you can definitely learn it. Acting classes are also important even for those, for whom acting comes naturally. If a casting director, has to choose between two equally good freelance actors; the person who has gone through an acting class has a distinct advantage. In terms of a movie, acting classes will polish your skill and enable you to become a better actor.
The casting call
All freelance actors will have to answer a casting call, and go through a process of selection. Do remember not to get flustered, nervous, embarrassed, or intimidated by the proceedings.
Be prepared for the readings, and interact with all the people, showing confidence in your abilities.
Movie casting directors are a finicky lot and as a freelance actor you will have to work hard to land a role. Keep these tips in mind, to make your job a bit easier.
