A Few Tips for Website Security

As more and more sensitive data is exchanged over the internet, website security gains paramount importance. There are various levels of security that are used for security and one of the most effective and widely used tools of web security is encryption.

Here are a few tips with regards to website security that one must keep in mind.

Passwords

Use passwords as the first line of defense when it comes to maintaining website security. Many programs give users the option of a specific maximum number of characters that can be used for the passwords. Try to make your password as long as possible. This is because each additional character will make it that much more difficult for someone to crack it.

Security codes

It’s important that the security codes of the website security are known only by the owner of the website. No one else must be privy to this information, as in the wrong hands, vital information could be compromised. If there is a suspicion that unauthorized personnel know the security codes, they must be changed on an immediate basis.

Protocols

For better website security avoid the use of Telnet or FTP protocols and use SFTP and SSH protocols instead. Both FTP and Telnet are plain text protocols and hence are considered insecure. Their transmission of user names and passwords over the network is such that anyone with network access can read them with ease.

SFTP and SSH protocols are encrypted and hence are great for the security of your website.

Scanning your site

You must scan your site, regularly, for all kinds of security vulnerability. You can choose from a wide variety of vulnerability auditing scanners that are available for this purpose. Such scanners are available in versions that are free and you will have to pay for others.

If the scanners detect some missing patches then you must immediately apply those patches using security update management tools.

Keep up-to-date

You must keep abreast of all the news that is in any way related to the software that is being used by your site. This is essential in terms of website security, and you must make sure that only the most recent versions of the programs are running on your site.

Even the security patches must be updated regularly to maintain the continued security of your site. There are various newsletters and alerts that are offered by software providers or hosting providers with regards to the program being used on the site. You must keep track of them and read them regularly.

Your hosting provider

The onus of maintaining website security is not only on your shoulders but also on the shoulder of your hosting provider as well. You must ensure that the provider keep all software updated, which also includes the security patches.

If you think that they are not doing so, you must urge them towards it, otherwise switch to a new web hosting service provider who assures the clients of a secure website.

The security of a website is one of the most important considerations while creating, developing, and hosting a site. Do remember that only a secure site can offer superior efficacy.
